So this may or may not be my favourite book tag on YouTube (it definitely is), so why not do it in blog form? There’s just something satisfyingly fun about watching people talk about popular books that they don’t like unless you love them, then that kind of sucks. But please do remember that my opinions are my own and you are entitled to love a book that I hate and please, enjoy.
1. A popular book or series that everybody else loved but you didn’t
For this one, I think I’m going to have to go with The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey. Sure it’s a cool apocalypse story with aliens and smart plot lines and twists but, I had to push my way through this entire book. I found it frustrating that we were always switching P.O.V without knowing, I would spend ages reading when I didn’t even know whose P.O.V I was reading from. The romance for me was dull and I didn’t connect to any of the characters, especially Cassie. For me, the entire book was a boring drag with little spark.
2. A popular book or series that everyone hates but you love
I don’t really have an answer for this one as there isn’t many series that majority of the book community hates, so I’m going to go with the Fallen series by Lauren Kate. Now this series is definitely popular but it has it critics (a lot of them). And don’t get me wrong, I totally see why, I see all the flaws and reasons why someone might not like it. But honestly, It’s addicting. I recently re-read it due to the movie release (don’t watch it), and although the flaws stood out to me more than when I read it in high school I still flew through it with joy. I mean what can I say? It’s cliché, it’s got angels, romance, teenage drama, it has all that addicting junk that sucks you right in.
3. A love triangle where the protagonist ended with the wrong person
I don’t want to spoil anything so all I’m going to say is QUEEN OF SHADOWS, EMPIRE OF STORMS! C.W Forever! And yes I will go down with that ship!
4. A popular book genre you rarely reach for
I think my answer for this will have to be historical fiction. I considered putting contemporary but I really dislike historical fiction. I’m sorry if you love it but I just find it so incredibly boring and I really don’t have the patience. And when books are marketed as something different and then turn out to be historical fiction * cough * And I darken, It’s really disappointing and annoying.
5. A popular book character that you did not like
Who thought a Rick Riordan book would make it on this list? Not me, Rick Riordan is renowned for his fantastical characters, but there’s one that I honestly wish would just disappear, Jason. Now I’m sorry if you like him but, WHY DOES HE EVEN EXIST?! He’s the son of Zeus and all he does is get knocked out every 5 seconds. I find him incredibly boring, he has no sense of humour and every time his chapters come up I fall asleep.
6. A popular author you just can’t get into
Okay bare with me, and don’t hurt me… I mean I tried, I really tried, I read 9 of her books! Do you know how many that is? But alas, me and Cassandra Clare are not destined to be. I mean I want to love her, she’s the most popular author in the book community other than J.K Rowling. But in the end, her books were mediocre to me. I thought they were okay but I didn’t feel that die hard to love that everyone else does. So after struggling to finish The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series, I have officially given up.
7. A popular book trope that your tired of seeing
So I don’t see this one too much anymore but I’m sure you all know it. The unpopular or average girl who thinks she’s ugly but every guy likes her and she’s actually physically perfect. All I have to say is It drives me mad and pls stop. (Artist of drawing unknown).
8. A popular series you have no interest in reading
I see a lot of people rave about this series but Outlander by Diana Gabaldon doesn’t tickle my interest in the slightest. I watched the first season of the show and it was okay but I haven’t been able to get through the second so that’s probably a bad sign. I mean the concept is cool but honestly, it just does not seem up my alley.
9. The saying goes ‘The book is always better than the movie’, but what movie or TV show is better than the book?
After I closed Paper Towns by John Green I wanted to throw it across the room and scream about how much time I’d wasted reading it. I didn’t like the ending and Margo is a terrible person. But the movie was good, I mean it wasn’t amazing but it was fun, the acting was good, the story was more interesting to me, and it didn’t make me want to throw my popcorn at the screen.
