In 2011 Michelle Hodkin published the first book in the Mara Dyer trilogy. This is one of my all time favourite trilogy/series and although I’d love to brag about how long I’ve loved and fangirled over these books, in truth I only read them last year. But despite that, my love for these books is still strong and I’m going to share that with you today. If you’ve been wondering If you should read this trilogy, then wonder no more. Because I’ve compiled some reasons as to why you should. (honestly, just do it,)
1. It’s Beautifully Dark
We’ve all read those ‘dark’ YA books, but the Mara Dyer Trilogy is something else. It touches on topics and events that I’ve never seen in any other book. Even with the fun moments in this trilogy, there is, always a darkness surrounding the pages, which make’s it a beautifully unique book to read.
2. You Never Know What’s Happening
Mara is an unreliable narrator, which means we can never fully trust what she believes. The entire first book is a big guessing game. And that whole trilogy is shrouded in this mystery that it will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. There is so much happening and instead of knowing it all, we are completely in the dark. Meaning that we feel and see the same time Mara does. The fact that Mara is unreliable gives you a unique reading experience that you’ll fall in love with.
3. It Touches On Mental Illness
Mara suffers from PTSD which is something I’ve personally never read about in a book. Most books that talk about mental illness discuss depression or anxiety, which is great! But it’s interesting to read about a mental illness that isn’t widely discussed, even though it affects a lot of people.
4. It’ll Make You Feel
From sadness, excitement, fear, happiness, anger and hopelessness, The Mara Dyer trilogy will make you feel it all. It’s funny, but scary, and also nerve-wracking. Reading these books is like a roller coaster of emotions that you’ll never want to get off.
The Mara Dyer trilogy is like nothing I’ve ever read before. It will take you on a journey that will have you constantly on the edge of your seat. I don’t even have an if you like this then read this recommendation because I honestly think everyone should give these books a go. And if you do decide to then here’s a little tip, buy them all at once! The first two books have cliff hangers at the end AND IT WILL KILL YOU! Also, The Becoming of Noah Shaw is coming out in November this year so it’s the perfect time to read the trilogy. Have fun!
